How is the stream to be formed ? Modern attack formation, — In old days, the heavy colunm answered the purpose, and it was preceded by a thin skirmishing line. But the increased range and accuracy of fire have made it certain that no heavy column would ever reach the enemy. At the same time the action of a line, thicker than skirmishers, but thinner and less stiff than a line shoulder to shoulder, has become almost as powerful as the line itself would be, and every nation, including England, ha...s adopted a formation for attack which includes first, a shooting line, second supports, third reserves or main body, whichever it be called. These three together constitute the first line. Behind it will be a second line ; but what we have to deal with for the moment is this first line with its three parts, which constitute virtually an idealised column. Speak- ing generally, the work of the shooting line is to engage the enemy's attention and partly subdue his fire ; the supports feed the shooting line ; the reserves ward off flank attacks, make flank attacks or, finally, become absorbed in the shooting line and strengthen it.
