Freights from the East Indies have kept fairly steady, with the exception of business from the rice ports, which' has suddenly collapsed. Supplies of rice at the shipping ports falling short, merchants experienced much difficulty in providing for steamers already chartered and now arriving out, and they are therefore cancelling some charters and declining all further engagements for the present.
