The tubes were arranged vertically and hung pendulous from the top boxes. To ensure continuous circulation each tube was divided by a vertical diaphragm extending nearly, but not quite, to the bottom, the water flowing down one side an...d up the other, and so on in succession throughout the entire series of tubes from the inlet to the outlet. A number of Economisers of this kind were put into operation, but the impossibility of locating the position of any block in the circulation arising from the deposit of sediment or other cause was found to give rise to serious trouble.
