The day before arriving at Ho-kiang I recollect very well going ashore in the evening after we anchored and walking along the bank, which was there formed by the steep side of a lull, when I came suddenly on a delightful retired little nook. A small neat cottage stood under the lee of a rocky cliff, and was entirely secluded from public view by a profasiori of foliage. The ordinary bamboo formed of course the mass, the orange added a deep green, while the banana and a sohtaiy palm gave a tropical touch, and the whole was softened down by the graceful curves of the top shoots of the feathery bamboo.
