The water splashed round the boat and made a nice gurgly, friendly noise. The children all felt very happy. They were on their own. They were escaping from the horrid Sticks. They were going to stay on Kirrin Island, with the rabbits and gulls and jackdaws.
"Doesn't that new-made bread smell awfully good?" said Dick, feeling very hungry as usual.
