1 Lindsay. Latin Language, p. 300. Mr. Lindsay seems somewhat to dis- parage the value of this evidence, saying, c Puns are unsafe evidence of pronunciation. ' There are, however, perfect puns as well as imperfect ones ; and it is obvious that the orator's witticism, ' ego quoque tibi fauebo ', must have missed fire unless the assonance was absolutely perfect.
