This lower layer is composed chiefly of decayed vegetation, and might accumulate at the rate of one inch in six years, which would gi...ve the age of the lowest layer 216 years previous to the upper one, or 316 years ago : i. e., 1570 to 1575. Plate XXVIII, at page 104, shows a well-preserved «kull from the village site. The skull is that of a young woman about twenty years of uge. It is very unusual to ^nd skeletons buried near the village site except those of children.
