What reading level is Foundations of Chemistry book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
These flakes of graphite and crystals of iron carbide do not get a chance to settle out or to float off, but they remain suspended throughout the mass of metal to the etched surface of which they give a mottled appearance under the microscope. If the melted iron is cooled very rapidly, none of the carbon has a chance to separate out, but it still remains in solution in the now solid iron (solid solution), and in consequence of the presence of carbon in this state the metal is extremely hard as ...well as brittle. The extreme hardness and brittle- ness may be removed to any desired extent by cautious reheating, the so-called tempering process. During the tempering process more or less of the carbon passes from the solid solution into the microscopic crystals of iron carbide. Iron carbide has never been prepared pure in large masses ; it is only known in the form of the infinitesimally small crys- tals embedded in masses of iron. It is, nevertheless, a sub- stance of great im- portance in view of its pronounced effect upon the properties of iron and steel.
