Madier de Montgau, the generous champion of the protestants atNismes, was officially summoned before the Court of Cassation at Paris, over which M. De Serre, Keeper of the Seals, presided, to answer for analleged impropriety of conduct as a magistrate, in making those publicappeals to the Chamber which saved the protestants, and increased thedifficulties of renewing those persecutions of which he complained. TheFrench attorney general demanded the erasure of his name from the listof magistrates..., but this the court refused. Unfortunately since the lawof elections in France has been changed, two of the bitterest enemies ofthe protestants had been chosen Deputies at Nismes. The future, therefore, is not without its dangers, and the condition of thepersecuted may fluctuate with the slightest political alteration; butwhich, it is to be hoped, may be prevented from any acts that may againdisgrace the catholic religion, by the powerful expression of the publicmind, actuated with better principles, or by the interference of theprotestant influence in this or other countries.
