What reading level is Francias Masterpiece An Essay On the Beginnings of the Immaculate Conception I book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

The con- ventional writers on art are one and all silent on the subject, and disconcerting as it may be, one can but attribute their silence to ignorance. Yet in face of the references to the Conception on the scrolls, the rod can obviously be no other thing than the sceptre of Ahasuerus with all its mystical significance. You remember the touching and beautiful scene in the Book of Esther where the Queen, saviour of her people, is exempted from the edict of general destruction. She is, in the ...ESTHER 19 liturgy, a type of the Blessed Virgin, who, Im- maculate in her Conception, was, by Divine Provi- dence, exempted from the general law by which all mankind are born in original sin. Let us turn for a moment to the Book of Esther. There we read: " Quid habes, Esther? Ego sum frater tuus, noli metuere. Non morieris: non enim pro te sed pro omnibus haec lex constituta est. Accede igitur et tange sceptrum. Cum ilia reticeret, tulit auream virgam, et posuit super collum ejus. . . . "^ The picture, therefore, undoubtedly represents, not merely the Conception, but the Immaculate Con- ception, a dogma which during the Pontificate of the Franciscan Pope, Sixtus IV (1471-1484), grew greatly in popularity and gained great ground, and this picture of Francia's might even be the earliest representation of the Immaculate Conception in Art.
