Visit wlklpedla.org to learn Ann Jarvis, a young Appalachian homemaker, was the first to call attention to Mothers' Work Days in 1 858 when she organized women throughout the Civil War to work for better sanitary condi- tions. When Jarvis died, her daughter, Anna, initiated a crusade to found a memorial day for women. The first such celebration occurred in Grafton, West VA on May 1 0,... 1908 in the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church where her mother had taught Sunday School. The 1912 General Conference of The Methodist Episcopal Church, at the suggestion of delegates from Andrews M.E. Church, recognized Jarvis as the founder and advo- cated the celebration of the holi- day. From there, the custom spread to 45 states and was offi- cially declared by some in 191 2. In 1914 President Wood row Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day, as a day for Ameri- can citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war.
