In linguistics, the collection embraced a good provision of Dictionaries and Grammatical vrorks, for one hundred and four several languages. In Theology, the aim was wisely restricted to the obtain- ment of an excellent series of books, in very few branches. Texts and versions of the Holy Scriptures ; the Benedictine Editions of the Fathers of the Church, and those of -some of the chief of the. mediaeval theologians ; the great collec- tions of Councils and Synods ; and finally the writings of ...those among the English Divines, from the dawn of the Reformation downwards, who rank as classics in their kind, were collected ; and most of the other portions of the vast field of theology were, for the time, passed over. Enough has been said to show that both the judgment and the patient industry with which Mr. Astor's project was carried into execution were worthy of the munificence and the public spirit that formed the plan of the Astor Library, and provided the means of creating it. Nor were the regulations under which it was opened to the Public — on the first day of February, 1854 — ^less worthy of the Regulations Fouudcr and the foundation ; taking these regulations as a hihT^*^ whole, and admitting that, on certain points of detail, they are obviously susceptible of improvement.
