At I Sana he routed Pappus, whom Antigonus had sent with an army against Samaria. As soon as the rigour of winter was past, he laid siege to Jerusalem, and repeated the tactics of Pompey. Their courage was sustained by the belief that the Messianic deliverance was at hand. In five months, however, the city was taken, and the streets ran with blood. This took place in June, B. C. 37, on the twenty-sixth anniversary of the capture of the city by Pompey.
