The much- boasted wild and savage aspect of these islanders (sic) little intimidated us ; and it often happened that we shared provisions with them, as we did with other nations as soon as we understood their language. I give an instance of this, which the soldiers who made this campaign can confirm. The Chasseurs on the banks of the Omuler river crossed over to an island in the river, to carry off the potatoes, which the unfortunate Polish peasants had buried there. They met some Cossacks who ...had come for the same purpose, and the two parties, 170 Potatoes and Peace though they could not converse owing to difference of language, agreed by signs that they would leave their arms in the boats which had brought them, and that they would search together and divide the spoil equally, all of which was faithfully observed. The Chasseurs, being quicker and cleverer than the Cossacks, soon found potatoes, and religiously observed the clauses of this tacit agreement.
They divided the potatoes with the Cossacks, and each party returned to its own side of the river like good friends, and after shaking hands.
