And now that we have seen what is the min- istry of the rain for the Jew and for the Gentile, let us learn finally what use the Bible makes of it in teaching us who are of the Church of God.
In the sublime song of Moses, the oldest poem in the world, we have as the first promise there given by God, these rhythmic words, that sound not unlike the falling rain itself, "My doctrine shall drop as the rain, My speech shall distil as the dew; As the small rain upon the tender herb, And as the showers... upon the grass." Deut. xxxii. 2.
Divine doctrine is then to the soul what the rain is to the earth. Not the most perfect seed in the most propitious soil, can ever reach its full development without the rain of heaven; and in proportion to its timely supply will be the beauty and fertility of the land. The earthly elements, however rich, can never suffice without the heavenly aid; as mosf surely no soul that is not constantly nourished by the Spirit of God working through His word and truth can ever be developed according to the eternal purpose.
