This plan of government, proposed by the convention, was finally adopted by all the states and began its opera- tion in 1789. Col. Bardett was an active member of the convention for adopting it in 1788; and was chosen a senator to congress with Col. Langdon in 1789. This 20 154 MEMOIR OF HON. JOBIAH BARTLETT, office he declined accepting, through the mfirmities of agf; The Hon. Josiah Bartlett was elected President of New- Hampshire in June, 1 790. Hi this oliice, he conti^iucd until June, 1793... ; when he was elected the first governor of the state. In this oilice, as in all others, his duties were promptly and faithfully dischargr-d. He was a ruler, in whom the wise pl. Iced confidence, and of whom even the captious could tind nolhing to comj)la!n.
In 1794, Governor Bartlett retired from the chair of Chief Magist'-ate of the stale. On the 29th of January, he addressed the following letter to the Legislature, at their winter session of 1 793 — 4.
" Gentlemen of the Legislature^ After having served the puLlick for a number of years to the best of my abilities in the va?-ious ofrlces to which I have had the honor to he appomtcd, I think it proper before your adjournment to signify to vou, and through you to my fellow citizens at large that 1 now fmd myself so far advanced in life, that it will be expe- dient for me at the close of the session to retire from the cares and fatigues of publick business, to the repase of a private life, with a grateful sense of the repeated marks of trust and confidence that my fellow citizens have re- posed in me, and vrilh my best wishes for the futui'e peace and ]trofpci-ity of the State.
