Brownell (5-21) made a flying trip on foot, to the Grand River country as it was then called; a gr...eat part of the way was through the woods, the country at that time being sparsely settled, but they averaged about forty miles a day : Their route was via Milford, Byron, Laingsburg, Dewitt, Portland, Lyons and Ionia to Grand Rapids. On their return, he attended the fall term of select school at Farmington, taught by Mr. ]\Iosher, who succeeded Mr. Dailey. In the winter of 1847-8, Mr, Mosher was prin- cipal of the seminary at Plymouth, Michigan, and Daniel, with his cousin, William Brownell (5-23) attended that school.
