With our increasing city growth the urban population has arisen from the low status of three per cent, of the entire number, until in 1880 twenty-four per cent, of our people were in cities, and at present date it is safe to say that one-third of all our people live in cities, or large villages so connected by the railroad that they are practically suburbs of cities. The city life breaks up completely the old patriarchal rule in the community.
