The identification of objects by skin contact and manipulation alone, is called stereognosis. If we reach behind a screen and feel an object, we can usu- ally tell what it is. A watch is colder and heavier than a pencil. The surfaces of the two objects when rubbed afford different stimulation to sense organs in the skin and muscles.
