In all these oases, the good effects result from the influence of the drug on the uterus in action.
It has been an objection, often urged against ergot, that the num- ber of still-bom has been augmented since its introduction ; and &r- ther, that observation has shown, whenever it is given to expedite- delivery, that more or less danger accrues to the offspring, either by the induction of asphyxia, or of positive death, owing to me violence of the uterine contractions, or to the deleterious agency of the drug on the foetus.
