Gently climbed out and lounged by the car. ‘Which way is Deerview Cottage?’ he asked.
The man glanced up briefly from his gushing nozzle. ‘Turn right up here by the green,’ he said. He slid Gently another look. ‘That’s Ted Keynes’s place,’ he said. ‘But I reckon you won’t find him in. I saw him come past here a time back.’ ‘It’s his friend I’m looking for,’ Gently said.
