No comprehen- sive rule can be given to govern the num- ber of these reference stations; all must depend upon the judgment of the direc- tor of the survey, and the resources at his command. In general, the farther the place of an observation from its reference station, the less reliable will be its result. But, as an exception, let us take the example of a broad inland plain, separated from the sea and its influences by a wall of mountains, within which, upon the plain, the reference station is situated.
