The opportunities along the middle Illinois for the study of valley development are unsurpassed. Tributary valleys are crowded together on both sides of the river. If the slopes leading to Illinois Valley at the withdrawal of the ice sheet had been of uniform steepness ...and composition, and the rain that fell upon them had been everywhere equal, the run-off, and the quantity of earth washed down slope by the run-off, would have been equal along all lines. Doubtless none of these conditions existed. The slopes were more or less irregular, and the run-off therefore uneven. Where more water descended, its velocity was greater and it eroded faster than elsewhere, forming a depression. The surface materials of the slopes varied from point to point in size and compactness.
