In the eastern districts they are shown as a broad band of fresh-water strata (Potomac formation, etc. ) rang- ing from New Jersey round the southern extremity of the Alleghanies into the centre of the Mississippi basin. In Texas they consist of marine limestones, and even of white chalk with fossils of the Mediterranean type.
