Clovis was proud to be regarded as a Roman officer, Brunechild and her family were in close alliance with Rome, and had very Roman ideas of government. Charles the Great, although too wise a man to dream of applying the principles of Imperial despotism, was not averse to adopting the pomp and style of Imperial Rome, and the shadows of old realities into which a bold hand might yet put life. The con- junction of this aggregate of Roman influences with the substratum of German institutions common... to the whole race, was the origin of feudalism ; but under Charles the Great the feudal system as a system of government was still a long way off, and the perfecting of it as a system of land tenure belongs to the reign of Conrad the Salic. But the most efficacious influence of Roman Imperialism was imported by the incorporat- ing of the claims upon Italy with the imperial character of the German king, and the constant association sub- sisting thenceforth between two countries in other respects so much divided.
