THE NORFOLK DWAEF. 321 On the 5th of that month he was shown to the Royal Society, at their house in Crane-court. The London, Gazette for January 10th, 1752, says : " On Wed- nesday evening, Mr. John Coan, the Norfolk dwarf, was sent for to Leicester House by her Royal High- ness the Princess Dowager of Wales, and was imme- diately introduced before he...r, his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Prince Edward, Princess Augusta, and all the other Princes and Princesses being pre- sent, where he staid upwards of two hours ; and we are assnred by the pertinency of his answers, actions, ■and behaviour, their Royal Highnesses were most agreeably entertained the whole time, and made him a very handsome present." The same newspaper for January 14th adds, that " on Wednesday, when Mr. John Coan, the Norfolk dwarf, who is now to be seen at the watchmaker's, facing the Cannon Tavern, Charing-cross, was at Leicester House, and had the honour of being introduced to their Royal Highnesses, he repeated the following lines : " Behold, most gracious Princes I at your feet, In miniature, a man of form complete : If honour'd thus, too blithly I behave, pardon at this time your little slave, Who inward blesses his peculiar fate That made him small, to pleasure you so great.
