The fossil remains of the chalk differ entirely from those of the Eocen...e (to which the Thanet Sands belong), certain forms of life having during the interval become extinct, and given place to those which are peculiar to the Eocene age.
The strata, or layers, to which I have referred, have been arranged by geologists, according to the mineral- ogical and palaeontological characters with which they are stamped, into twelve grand systems, beneath which occurs what is supposed to be the original surface of the earth, denuded, of course, by miles of material which might have been worn down in intermediate ages to form the various strata which now rest upon it.
