In about 1983, I was asked if I wanted to take some sort of a special role in the club because of my interest in national parks; I had become a member of the IUCN Commission on National Parks and Protected Areas some time before this. I thought that the concept of the commission, of including not only national parks but also all protected lands, was a good one. So I agreed that I would be vice president of the Sierra Club for nationa...l parks and protected areas.
And while I'm the only one who's had that office, I let the office drop a year and a half ago when I became elected vice president and vice president for conservation, because I felt that the one was a part of the other.
125 But there are a number of different national park issues that I have been interested in, either in taking the lead or helping other people, not only in California, the GGNRA and Yosemite, but also Sequoia National Park, and this in a helping capacity.
