He reasoned to himself that if the Major was concerned with any conspiracy against the Slatering stable, the conspirators would be safe. His only doubt was in regard to the price which the Major would ask for his own dishonour. The Major also guessed the secret of Mr New- gate's cordiality, and determined to make his price as high as he could.
