It was impossible to wish for a Judge more dignified or impressive in manner, and more studiously anxious to fulfil the requirements of his position. His was a mind of massive simplicity. He had a strong hold over juries, by reason of the terseness of his charges, and the pains he took, to make the issues which they had to try clear and intelligible.
