Grant, in a letter to the Viceroy, while ...assuring him that there was no present likeli- hood of an interruption to the peace of the capital, added ** that no man would dare to say that such a thing was impossible anywhere," and that **a street tumult in Calcutta would do more to shake the Empire than the loss of a battle in Oudh." Fortunately, under the administration of Sir Frederick Halliday, the experienced Lieutenant- Governor of Bengal, not a shot was fired in defence or attack in that province.
