Even so they were not down-hearted. They were richer than before by the memory of Salamis and Marathon ; their strength had been tried and approved, and Athena herself had sent them a token of h(^)e, for the sacred olive-tree Tvhich had been burnt by the Persians had put forth a fresh shoot, a symbol of the new and vigorous life that now awaited Athens.
