This pho- netic characteristic (implying that the parent sound had set out on a given line of debilitation) is in accordance with the physiological characteristic of kw as indicated by its vocal formation. For in pronouncing this combination the point of contact of the tongue with the palate is much forwarder in the vocal passage than the point of contact at which the purest k (k before a=ah, for exa...mple) must be pro- duced ; and this is the physical characteristic o£ a weaker sound (§ 6) . Authority on this point may not count for much, or else that of Bopp 1 , Curtius 8 , and Corssen 8 might be quoted as in direct opposition to the views of Havet : in fact, their 1 V. opinions are, no doubt*, the " current opinions " which Havet expressly controverts. Nor, perhaps, is the point in dispute to be decided by the analogy supplied by the combination (ky) of the palatal semivowel (y) with k, which is universally admitted to be an initial debilitation, and the physical formation of which differs from that of kw almost entirely in the absence of protrusion of the lips.
