The opposite belief, that there is any point of view from which mankind can be regarded as progressive, so that the regular advances already made may warrant a hope that afterages will go on advancing in the same direction, seems to have been originally e. More than once too he GUESSES AT TRUTH. 315 explicitly asserts the law, which is tacitly and practically recognized by all men, that, according to the constitution of human nature, we may count that the future will re- semble the past.
