Stansfeld, was founded on the same site in 1765. It passedthrough several hands, and eventually, in 1880, Messrs. Stansfeldacquired possession and proceeded to erect new premises. It was the residence forsome time of Mrs. Fitzherbert, morganatic wife of George, Prince ofWales, afterwards George IV. It was built by Sir Francis Child, LordMayor of London in 1699, and was a plain white house. Admiral SirCharles Wager and Dr. Ekins, Dean of Carlisle, lived here at differenttimes.
