To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
She had been for some time complaining of swelled feet and pain in head with a great deal of nervous excita- tion. Early in her eighth month she had a sudden attack of eclampsia in the morniijg. Saw her in the third fit. She had not been conscious after the first one. She was cautiously bled to ,5xv, which ap- peared to lessen the frequency and duration of the fits which still returned. At noon she was again bled to ,5xii with benefit, as the spasms gradually abated till evening. Consciousness ...did not return till the next day. Eight days after she was delivered, natur- ally, of a dead and putrid child. She convalesced slowly, and her nerve system remained badly shat- tered. From later experience, we think that the free use of morphia, after moderate bleeding, would have been more proper. 29th Case,R. L. (2d), 1863, 6, 14. Multipara. Dr. Michener. Same woman as the last. Those delicate mothers who are least able to bear the strain, are often sul)ject to more frequent child- bearing, than their abler sisters.
