Upon the East Coast of" Africa — from which the waterway of the lakes is at a distance of from 400 to 600 miles — the Government of Portugal has not only prohibited the slave trade, but abolished the status of slavery; and it is much to be regretted that these intentions are so badly carried out The Seeyid of Zanzibar has also prohibited the slave trade, but has equal difficulty in cari'ying out his policy.
