82. WHITE LEKYTHOI color (Case F). The Case F solid color washes are generally confined to one or two shades, preferably red and black. Sometimes, however, especially on the later examples, as many as four or five colors are employed, and a highly decorative and gay eff'ect is produced thereby. The subjects of the scenes are con- fined almost entirely to mourners bringing off'erings to a tomb. Two of our vases have difi^erent subjects; one shows a man and a woman clasping hands; another a child with his mother before Charon's boat (fig. 83).

Charon stands expect- antly at the prow of his boat, ready to ferry the little newcomer across to the abode of the dead.
It is noteworthy that in these repre- sentations dealing more or less directly with death, there is a quiet restraint in expressing grief for the departed.
