IL) Such was the indignation felt throughout Yorkshire at Scrope's " legalised murder," that his virtues — (which were in truth not small, he was a man of letters and of a " holy life ") — became magnified, in popular estima- tion, to an extraordinary degree, and his tomb here was sought by thousands as that of a saint. Offerings were made at it, and miracles were said to have occurred before it. The offerings were forbidden by an order from the King, Henry IV.,* and the officers of the cathe- ...dral were directed to pull down the screen (clausure de charpenterie) which surrounded the monument, and to pile wood and stone over the tomb (between the pier and the east wall), so as to prevent the access of the people.* The order was not, however, strictly obeyed.
