To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Buttmann, appeared in 1842-50, and differs from the first mainly in including the Vulgate text as well as the Greek, and in the fact that the evidence of the Latin authorities was taken into account through- out, and not only when the Eastern authorities disagreed among themselves. The method of Lachmann, as practised in both editions and expounded in the second, was this. Putting entirely aside the whole mass of later authorities, he confined his attention to a small group of very ancient manu...scripts, versions, and Fathers, and by their aid he believed that he could recover, not indeed always the actual words of the authors of the sacred books, but the earliest form of text which enjoyed wide circulation among the Churches, which might probably be assigned to the end of the fourth century. The authorities which he regarded as available for this purpose were, from the E^st, the manuscripts ABCH3PQTZ and the writings of Origen ; and from the West the bilinguals DD^EjGg, the Old Latin MSS.
