In some of the ancient mythologies, there were reckoned three distinct phases of the sun's course; there was the nocturnal sun, the winter's sun, and the sun of the primordial night of chaos ; and to each of these was attached its appropriate rising. Ideas of this nature were asso- ciated with Osiris among the Egyptians. Something simihir was held also with respect to the moon.
