On these specimens nearly all the leaves are smooth on the back ; however we have found a few branches with papillose leaves, which, added to the other characters, leaves no doubt as to their de- termination. Moreover, even on the specimens from New England, the leaves are sometimes quite smooth. This character is therefore variable, which prevents us from admitting the genus Bryhnia.
