To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
In spite of the Doctor's convincing earnestness he Digitized by Google 266 THE SHIFTING SPELL had spoken very quickly up to the point at which the lazy Douglas received the advice to dress quickly and stalk the burglar in the Park. Having reached this point, however, Dr. Amos took advantage of another useful truth — Douglas' hatred of exertion — and, therefore, he described slowly and impres- sively how much precious time was wasted before Janet's lethargic unde could be forced to put on some c...lothes or be induced to do anything except ask for the sleeping draught. But as soon as the description of the prolonged dressing operations had been brought to an end, the pace of the invented narrative quickened, and Janet learnt that her uncle and Dr. Amos, each hastily dressed, had decided that time would be saved if they were to go out into the garden through the smoking-room window instead of having to unbolt and unchain the heavy entrance door. The description of the slow dressing operation had included periodical comparisons with the speed shown by the supposed burglar (or "fire- fly") in crossing the Park.
