What reading level is Hausaland book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
When one realises the extremely slight influence which Mohammedanism exerts upon the great mass of the people, it seems strange that the numbers who annually attempt the pilgrimage should be so large. The explanation is to be found partly in the fact that the Hausas are naturally an enterprising people, and that a journey to Mecca affords them a convenient means of gratifying their love of adventure ; and partly in the fact that the journey, despite its risks and THE PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA. 197 ha...rdships, is from a money point of view by no means always unremunerative. Sir G. Goldie, speak- in o- on behalf of the Hausa Association in the London Chambers of Commerce, said that on one occasion when travelling from Khartoum to Suakim he had fallen in with a caravan consisting of six hundred Hausa pilgrims, who were on their way to Mecca, but were at the same time acting as traders in the diiferent countries through which they passed. This constant intercourse with Mecca has brought the Hausa people into touch, not only with it, but with countries such as Egypt and Tripoli, and has probably contributed to the attainment of the very remarkable degree of civilisation which exists to-day amongst them.
