Four months after this event a new in- cursion took place, after the manner of that of September, 1808; having again for its object to bring off Lamarre. The rebels had forgotten the many defeats they had experienced in so many quarters, they wanted one lesson more, which they speedily received ; but being too well ac- quainted with the environs of St. Marc, they contented themselves with appearing before the Mirebalais, and when they were about to be attacked, nearly the whole of their forces ...retreated a great way into the Spanish part, and then fell unexpectedly upon the spring and the great river, having promised themselves nothing less, in the 11 87 height of folly and presumption, than a march upon the Capital, as they had pom- pously given out.
The President, informed of the projects of the rebels, would not take any step to give them a confidence which he was sure they would abuse: the event has justified his conjectures. It was only on their ar- rival in front of the spring, that troops were sent aeainst them to harass them.
