"So please don't say nothing; just mail my letter. " Calling the nurse, I got permission to visit with Charles on the asylum grounds. Charles was neat and well-mannered, but sometimes vulgar in speech. I found his memory excellent; his mathematics and map reading, good. "What makes you think you're insan...e?" I asked. "Voices always talking to me, " he said. "Are they talking to you now?" "Yes, all the time. " "What do they say?" 172 HELL'S CAULDRON Charles laughed in embarrassment. "That's it I don't know it's all jumbled up. " "Whose voices are they?" Charles hesitated and looked down in embarrassment. I patted his shoulder. "Tell me. " Charles laughed. "Well, they're Negro women. " "Are they suggesting that you go to bed with them?" "No, it's nothing like that I just don't know it's just lots of voices all the time I don't know what they say.
