He then placed in the old man's hands a large quantity of jewels and plate, and desired him to convert it with all speed into bills of exchange upon Paris. Va- rious interviews took place ; for,... as Master Wilson said, money was scarcely to be had in the city ; trade was nearly ruined with the civil dissensions of the times, and he could not pro- cure for the articles intrusted to him, any thing like their real value. He did not choose there- fore to act on his own responsibility, and was more than once obliged to consult Frank on his conduct. The matter, however, was at length finally settled ; and the amount of nearly twenty thousand pounds was obtained and transmitted to my brother in bills of exchange.
