To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Perhaps, as is so often the case, the poet's simplest and least ambitious poems are those to which we turn most frequently and with the greatest pleasure. We admire " The Passions, " and the still more ambitious " Ode on the Popular Superstitions of the Highlands of Scotland;" but the incompar- able " Ode to Evening, " the lines, twelve in number, dedicated to the brave men who died for their country, and in a lesser degree the " Dirge in Cym- beline/' and the " Ode on the Death of Thomson, " *... "The English Poets: Selections, " edited by T. H. Ward, M. A. Vol. Iii. GRAY AND COLLINS. 235 are among the treasures of memory. Lengthened illustrations of a poet's worth would be wholly out of place in a volume which has neither the merits nor the defects of an anthology, but short poems of rarest beauty it is always an advantage to quote, and for two reasons : they relieve the inevitable monotony of criticism, and they exhibit as no criticism can, the characteristics of a poet's genius. If there be any youthful student who has never yet opened the little volume that contains the masterpieces of Collins, let him, before doing so, read with the attention they merit the two follow- ing poems.
