When the Reform Bill goes through on Olympus, all critics and certainly all biographers, will carry their non-academic vita with them at all times, to be checked as freely as the tag on a decanter, before it pours forth. We shan’t want to see their medals. What we’ll want to know is the state of their beds, their dreamgoals and psychic pocketbooks, before we listen to them freudenize Twain and stack-sullivanize Keats.
