It is drilled, blasted, and hoisted to the surface, where it is assorted in part by hand labor, and shipped to all the surrounding country within 500 miles or more, according to the cost of transportation. It reaches the Missouri River, the head of the Great Lakes, and in the bunkers of ocean steamships many foreign ports. The Appalachian field furnishes 60 per cent of the bituminous coal, which is distributed as far as the lower Mississippi and through Atlantic seaports to Central and South Am...erica. About one tenth of the bitumi- nous coal is converted into coke by heating in ovens, the volatile parts going to waste. This does not include the gas-house coke made as a by- product in the manufacture of illuminating gas. The coke is used chiefly for smelting and melting iron, and is sent as far as Chicago. The coal of the Interior fields, about one third of the whole, supplies local markets and finds its way westward nearly to the Rocky Mountains. About half of all the coal mined is used in metallurgy, for power in manu- facturing and transportation, and for lighting.
